We think sustainability is pretty straightforwards
It may all sound a bit Miss World, but we want to leave things a little bit better than we find them. To do business in a more enlightened way; where we take responsibility for the impacts of our business on society and the environment, and move these impacts from negative to neutral, or better still, positive. We call this our drive for sustainability.
keeping things natural
As a food company, our first and most important responsibility is to make drinks that are good for people. We only use 100% natural ingredients - we won't put anything in an innocent smoothie unless it's made by nature. That means we never use any concentrates, flavourings and other weird additives.
responsible ingredients
We want to be proud of every piece of fruit we use. We strive to buy our fruit from plantations that respect and enhance local human, social and environmental conditions. Our procurement team makes a habit of getting out there and checking social and environmental standards on our farms to ensure we're all working towards best practice, and we favour suppliers approved by independent environmental and social auditors, and pay a premium for fruit from farms with the highest ethical accreditation such as the Rainforest Alliance (all our bananas are Rainforest Alliance certified and now some of our pineapple and passion fruit too). We also pay a premium to source fruit locally if the quality and variety is available.
sustainable packaging
We want to lead the world in sustainable packaging. While our packaging must first and foremost do it's job, we want it to have the lowest environmental impact possible. First step - we don't use new stuff unless we have to – last year we introduced the first ever 100% recycled plastic drink bottle, and we use 100% recycled boxes and distribution packaging. Second step - we try and use less, it's the simplest, and most often overlooked step, but very important. We have reduced the amount of plastic in our bottles by 20%, and are now looking to do the same with our kid's cartons this year. Third - we tell our drinkers about the best recycling and other end of life options. Lastly - we only work with suppliers that share our vision and provide solutions.
resource efficient business
As we all know, global warming is the number one environmental issue facing the world. Our vision in this area is to contribute to global cooling, not warming, by reducing our use of natural resources throughout the whole business. We have measured our carbon footprint from farm to fridge and are now working with our suppliers and bottlers to achieve reductions across our entire business. We are proud to say that we reduced our carbon footprint by 15% in 2007 and we will be working really hard this year to achieve further reductions. We also have some basic rules that we stick to, like refusing to air freight our fruit, thinking before we fly, using green energy for our offices and sourcing our ingredients locally where we can.
sharing the profits
Last but definitely not least, we seek to redistribute some of the wealth the business creates to those people that need it. We do this by donating 10% of our profits each year to charity, primarily to the innocent foundation, which funds rural development projects in the countries where our fruit comes from. Set up by innocent three years ago, the foundation's vision is to work with local communities to create a sustainable future for people and their environment. We aim to support innovative projects that make best use of natural resources to create a better future.
